The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev moved into its new home,
the Cukier, Goldstein-Goren Building, in 1976. At that time, only half of the building was completed.
The second half was finally inaugurated on June 3, 1992.
The Faculty plays a major role in the ongoing development of the Negev. Known throughout the academic world for its high standards of teaching and research, it also devotes itself to the advancement of the Negev’s residents’ social welfare through topical research and the promotion of cultural programs. With a staff of 200 and a student body of about 4,000, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest of the University’s four faculties. It comprises 10 academic departments and a unit for the study of English as a second language. Humanities departments include: Philosophy, Archeology, Languages, Literature and Jewish Studies. Social Sciences departments include: Economics, Geography, Behavioral Sciences, Education and Social Work. A considerable percentage of the Faculty’s graduates, generally considered top-level professionals, remain to build their future in the Negev. The state-of-the-art building includes lecture halls, classrooms, laboratories, computer rooms, offices and staff rooms, for a total of 9000 sq.m. The donation by the Cukier, Goldstein-Goren Foundation helped establish Ben-Gurion University as an important factor in the development of Israel’s southern desert area. The Negev comprises 60% of Israel’s land area, but only 10% of its population. At present some 17,623 students are enrolled at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. The erection, in 1976, of Stage 1 of the Cukier, Goldstein-Goren effectively launched the University’s expansion program while Stage 2 has enabled it to keep apace with its recent growth. |

The Department of Jewish Thought
|

The Goldstein-Goren International Center for Advanced Jewish Thought was established in academic
year 1999/2000 at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, as a part of the Goldstein-Goren Department
of Jewish Thought.
The Center offers a number of doctoral and post-doctoral scholarships each year.
It also promotes every three years an international conference during which the Goldstein-Goren
Prize is awarded to the best book on Jewish Thought published during that period.
The first Prize was awarded in 2001 ex-aequo, to Moshe Halbertal for "Between Torah and Wisdom"
and to Dov Schwartz for "Astral Magic in Medieval Jewish Thought".

Interest – Student Scholarships

In 1992, the
Cukier, Goldstein-Goren Foundation signed an agreement with Ben-Gurion
University of the Negev, providing for the establishment of a fund for
granting interest-free loans to needy students. In 2005 the Foundation and the University agreed to end this program and use the endowment to grant undergraduate scholarships. |
